Caesarea by the Sea
This Mediterranean resort city, Caesarea Maritima,
was the home of Herod the Great and some of his sons, as well as Roman officials like Pontius Pilate, Felix, and Festus. Also, it was here that the Gospel was officially offered to the Gentiles when Peter visited the home of the Italian Centurion Cornelius. Historical evidence for the existence of Pontius Pilate was found at Caesarea indicating his position in Israel under Tiberius Caesar. The stone tablet on the left has the name of Tiberius clearly visible on the first line and most of Pontius Pilate’s name on the second line
Tel-Dan
The tribe of Dan was alloted the land occupied by the Philistines on the coast of ancient Canaan but were never able to displace them. Samson did his exploits there but since he never was a leader of people, pursuing personal interests, he failed as a judge in liberating his tribe. Consequently the tribe of Dan moved north above the lake of Galilee, into what is known today as the Golan. It is to Dan where Jeroboam, master builder of Solomon’s temple moved after the break of the ten tribes from the two after the folly of Rehoboam. It eventually became the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel, located at the former site of Laish, the third millennium city. Found at Tel-Dan was an Aramaic inscription by Avraham Biran containing the only reference outside of the Hebrew Bible to the House of David. I had the privilege of spending some time with Professor Biran and am pointing out in this picture the location of the words “house of David.”
